GPRS Based Central Monitoring of Parameters for Water Quality

This project presents the synthesis of a SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system, named Centralized Water quality parameters monitoring System, designed to collect and process Water quality parameters data measured in several strategic locations of a region. This RTU (Controller) based system makes use of the GPRS (general packet radio service) data communication infrastructure from a mobile communication provider to send data to the server at the central control station. Reports for several days can be viewed easily from anywhere by accessing the server ID through internet. In comparison to other similar systems, the new functionalities provided by this system are the SMS (Short Messaging Service) alerts generated by the RTU (Controller) when the Water quality parameters exceeds from a given values, chosen with regard to the required ratios.

The whole System includes:

  • The GSM/ GPRS controller which is mounted at each location.
  • All the analog inputs are connected to the controller. (not more than four Analog I/Ps can be connected)
  • Controller at each location sends the data obtained from the various Analyzer to the server.
  • It updates the server after a configurable time period which can be minimum one second.
  • The server at the central control location is connected through a Broadband connection to all controllers with a static IP address.
  • All the RTUs are provided with unique IP address and the User can view the data send by each RTUs by accessing the server with a particular login-ID through Internet.
  • There is no any direct communication between the machinery section(controller) and the PC section(user) at any local station.
  • In case of power failure, RTU can store upto 20 MB data and is provided with the battery back-up for 72 hours.
  • SMS alert at any fault condition is sent by the controller to defined mobile numbers. (maximum three mobile numbers can be defined)
  • From the central control location (centralized SCADA station), data is monitored.

GPRS Based Local Monitoring of Parameters for Water Quality

This project presents the synthesis of a SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system, named Water quality parameters monitoring System, designed to collect and process. Water quality parameters data measured in several locations of a region. This RTU (Controller) based system makes use of the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) data communication infrastructure from a mobile communication provider that covers a very large area. In comparison to other similar systems, the new functionalities provided by this system are the SMS (Short Messaging System) alerts generated by the RTU (Controller) when the level of values exceeds some given values, chosen with regard to the required water parameters.

The whole System includes:

  • The controller is mounted at each location.
  • All the analog inputs are connected to the controller. (not more than four Analog I/Ps can be connected)
  • Controller at each location sends the data obtained from the Analyzer to the controlling station situated at the particular location.
  • It updates the system at the local control station after a configurable time period which can be minimum one second.
  • The system at the controlling station is connected through a Broadband connection to the controller with a static IP address.
  • All the RTUs are provided with unique IP address and the User can view the data send by each RTUs to the system by accessing it with a particular login-ID.
  • There is no any type of direct communication between the machinery section (controller) and the PC section(user) at any local station.
  • In case of power failure, RTU can store upto 20 MB data and is provided with the battery back-up for 72 hours.
  • SMS alert at any fault condition is sent by the controller to defined mobile numbers. (maximum three mobile numbers can be defined)
  • From the control station (local SCADA station), data is monitored.
